Communication is changing by the minute - photography, video, multi-media, audio, even print. CameraCake.com is our way of helping you keep up with the best resources on photography, video, multimedia, business, productivity, sales, marketing negotiating, creativity, techniques, equipment, educational programs, and everything else.
We've designed it to be as easy as possible to post resources you think people need to hear about and for you to find what you're looking for. Every resource can be liked/disliked, reviewed and sorted by most recent or most popular. You can search by topic, poster, reviewer, category, tag and more.

What is CameraCake?
CameraCake.com is a searchable database filled with resources contributed by our users. When you submit a resource to CameraCake.com, the database generates a page that includes the URL and a brief description you provide. Other users can "like" or "dislike" the resource and add reviews or comments. Anyone can search the database using a variety of criteria - who posted or reviewed the resource, what kind of information it covers (e.g. marketing, licensing, equipment, etc.) and what type of resource it is (e.g. book, website, tutorial, etc.). You can also sort search results by most popular and most recent by clicking the appropriate tab.
How do I use CameraCake?
The first step is to create a profile using the button in the right side navigation column. Be sure to fill out all fields completely. Though not required, the “About Me” field tells other users a little about who you are and what you do. This field will become more important because CameraCake.com will be adding more social networking functions over time.
Next, use the Create a Resource button to add new resources or the search box on the home page to search for the resources you need. Select the appropriate tab to sort your search results by most recent or most popular. When you find a resource you’d like to know more about, click on it’s name or thumbnail to view the individual resource’s page. There you can like or dislike the resource, add a review or click on the title, icon or “Take me to it” link to jump directly to the associated URL for that resource.
Why do I have to use my real name?
CameraCake.com was designed by professionals, for professionals (although non-professionals like students and enthusiasts are truly welcome). We believe that requiring people to use their real names supports good manners, helps ensure the reliability of comments and posts, and keeps behavior such as "flaming" and other personal attacks to a minimum.
The best social bookmarking is personal. Finding resources that are right for you takes more than a good search engine. We encourage you to identify posters whose taste, judgment and interests mirror your own, subscribe to their postings and invite them to subscribe to yours. CameraCake.com is more than social bookmarking: it’s about professionals helping professionals.
How can I edit my Profile?
Click on the "My Profile" button in the right hand navigation column. The “View” tab displays what your public profile looks like. The ldquo;Edit” tab controls two functions: the “Account” header allows you to reset your password and change your time zone while the “Profile” header lets you update your contact information and edit the contents of your public profile. The third tab, Subscriptions, lets you manage your subscriptions as outlined here.
What’s the difference between a resource description and review?
When you post a new resource on CameraCake.com, you’ll be asked to provide a description of the resource. The first 35 words of that description will appear in the short listing that’s visible under the “Most Recent” and “Most Popular” tabs while the full description will only be seen when a user views the individual resources’ page. Descriptions should explain what the user will find when they go to this resource. They should be as factual, accurate and complete as possible.
Reviews can be added by the original poster or any CameraCake.com user. Reviews can supplement the description, offer opinions on the resource or describe users’ experiences with resource. Reviews allow users of CameraCake.com to discuss the resource and enhance other users’ understanding of why and how the resource is valuable.
Please note: it is a violation of CameraCake.com’s rules to use descriptions or reviews to intentionally mislead the community in any way, including but not limited to providing false information, posing as a disinterested third party, or using CameraCake.com to harm a competitor.
How can I direct others to the resources I’ve posted on CameraCake?
There are two ways to publicize your postings on CameraCake.com:
1) To connect people just to the resources you’ve posted, enter your name in the “Posted by” field of our search box and hit “search.” Copy the URL of the resulting page (sorted by most recent or most popular as you prefer) and distribute. You may wish to use a URL shortener such as bitly.com or tinyurl.com
2) The last 10 resources you’ve posted and liked along with your name, location and “About Me” description are visible on your profile page. To see your profile, just click on the “My Profile” button in the right hand navigation column or the link to your name under any resource you’re posted or reviewed. Copy and distribute the resulting URL.
How does CameraCake integrate Social Networking functions?
Each CameraCake.com user creates a profile and can follow other users or subscribe to specific resources or categories. We will be implementing greater social networking integration in the future. For example, the “Why is this valuable” field is limited to 120 characters to make it Twitter friendly. We are working towards implementing direct Twitter integration as well as Facebook sharing, curated lists, groups and discussions.
How do subscriptions work?
Every resource page provides the option to subscribe to that resource or the original poster. When you subscribe to reviews of a specific resource, you’ll receive an e-mail every time someone adds a review to that page. When you subscribe to the poster, you’ll receive an e-mail every time that poster adds or reviews a resource. The email notifications will be sent in a daily digest by default. You can change the frequency of the email in the 'subscriptions' tab of your user profile
To remove a specific resource or poster from your subscriptions list, click on “My Profile” in the right hand column, select the “Subscriptions” tab and navigate to “Pages/Threads” where you can use the check boxes to remove subscriptions. nbsp;Be sure to hit the “Save” button or your changes will not take effect.
You can also subscribe to specific Categories (e.g. Marketing, Technology, Video) and Types (e.g. Blog, Book, Website). You can manage these subscriptions by clicking on the “My Profile” button in the right hand column, then clicking on the “Subscriptions” tab and selecting the “Categories” header. Use the checkboxes provided to add or remove Category and Type subscriptions. Again, be sure to hit the “save” button at the bottom of the screen or your changes will not take effect.
What if I find an error or a bug?
Each individual resource page includes links at the top and bottom that allow you to “Report a Problem” with that page. Of course, you’re always welcome to contact the CameraCake.com team directly by sending an e-mail to CameraCake@ASMP.org. If you’re emailing us to report a bug, be sure to include your Operating System, Browser type and version as well as the URL of the problematic page and a description of the problem you’ve encountered.
What is CameraCake’s privacy policy?
Information you provide in your profile will not be sold to third parties. We require your contact information so we can reach you with any questions or concerns regarding your participation in CameraCake.com. The demographic information you provide also helps us make CameraCake.com more responsive to our users’ needs by allowing us to track information such as what content is most popular with different types of members. We respect your right to privacy and will not make any of your contact information other than your name and the general “location” that you provide publicly visible unless you choose to make it so. What is CameraCake’s policy on discussing pricing?
CameraCake.com permits users to post and review resources that help imaging
professionals price their work. However, comments must be limited to the
resources themselves and their value or usefulness. Due to federal antitrust
regulations, posts and reviews may not solicit or provide specific pricing
recommendations.
Who can participate in CameraCake
CameraCake.com is open to anyone who has something to say, and to share with others about photography, video, multi-media and other topics of interest to imaging professionals. You don't have to be an ASMP member or even a media professional. Articles, blogs, books, websites, videos, tutorials - you can post whatever you think will be helpful to others in the photography community. All participants are required to comply with CameraCake.com’s posted rules. Participation in CameraCake.com is permitted at ASMP’s discretion. We reserve the right to suspend or ban any user and/or remove any posted resources, reviews or other materials at ASMP’s sole and final discretion.
Why was CameraCake developed?
CameraCake.com is the first social bookmarkeing site built by and for imaging professionals. The American Society of Media Photographers developed CameraCake.com to harness the power of the photography community and to help imaging professionals learn from the best resources available.
Why is it called CameraCake?
Rather than controlling the naming process, the CameraCake.com development team applied the same spirit of community and shared resources behind CameraCake.com’s development to the naming process by holding a “Catchy Name” Competition, which netted over 500 submissions from the broader community. The winning name was submitted by Andrea Brandt, a student member of the ASMP Michigan chapter and chosen by our esteemed judges, Colleen Wainwright of Communicatrix.com, Ken Carbone of CarboneSmolan.com and Rob Haggert of PhotoEditor.com.
Colleen Wainwright explains "...it calls to mind a big, special, delicious treat, it has a nice flow to it and the alliterative consonants work as hard as their "c" sounds. And the whole "cake" thing is not only video-inclusive--it makes it seem like the multiplicity of shooting media is more fun."
Who is the team behind CameraCake?
The CameraCake.com development team consists of: Judy Herrmann (Herrmann + Starke and 2goodthings.com), ASMP past president, web oversight committee chair, and member of the Baltimore chapter; Barry Schwartz (Barry Schwartz Photography), ASMP national director and member of the Los Angeles chapter; and Luke Copping (Luke Copping Photography), member of the Western New York chapter.
